Room 8 Science Experiment

Room 8 did a science experiment  yesterday. And we used a number of equipment to help us investigate. The equipment we had were a ping pong ball, a pencil, a rubber, a marble, a feather,  a crumpled paper, a paper clip and a flat paper. My experimenting partner was Agnes.

The following table represents our results that we had when we investigated:

Interpreting and expressing visual ideas to match text.

They said it was just
an owl in the tree
but they didn't
  fool me!

I saw teeth
not a beak,
red eye
not gold,
and I won’t be told
it was only fluff and feathers
round it’s throat;
it was a collar
and those weren’t wings
but the silky folds
of a black, black cloak.

That was no
Too-wit, too woo
I heard.

It was
I’ll get you-ou!

Corporal Punishment, does it have a place in schools today?

My Speech

Ko te Ratu 17 o te Mahuru o tenei ra.

Do you really think that Corporal punishment should be brought back to New Zealand schools?

I don’t think that it should be reintroduced because why would teachers hit their students when the parents are not allowed to hit their own children. And abusing children is against the law anyway.

If you had a second just to be in the shoes of one of the students in the class how  would you feel? Smacking the students will probably decrease the child's self esteem. It also could cause the child to have a Phobia for a specific subject. When a child gets smacked in front of the class that is not fair for the children who have to watch the child get smacked and especially embarrassing for the child who is getting the smack. And if the children always watch students being smacked it will make the children scared and frightened to come to school.

I am going to talk to you about the law here in New Zealand. Back in those days the Maori society the children were rarely abused or hit, but once the British villages were recognized in the mid 19th century, corporal punishment became public across the whole village.

Corporal punishment is still going in more than 20 countries around the world. No child should beg for their forgiveness while being hit or spanked etc. Physical punishment also known as  corporal punishment is not a defensible technique for children. The definition of corporal punishment is the use of physical force with purpose of causing a child to feel or experience pain but supposedly no injury.

In my opinion these are some of the  reasons why corporal punishment should stay banned in New Zealand schools and all over the world.

Chocolate - Good or Bad? You decide

Ko te Ramere 30 o te Akuhata o tenei ra.

When you think about chocolate do you think of it being a healthy snack or a unhealthy snack? And that is what I am going to talk to you about.

I disagree that chocolate is a healthy snack because of all the sugar and calories it has in just a single piece of chocolate.

In Dairy Milk chocolate there is about a total of 18 grams of fat, 40% of saturated fat and 3% Cholesterol. At times I do think that dark chocolate is a healthy snack but only once a week.

Out and About in the Community

Are you wanting to book a holiday in 2 weeks time?
I am part of the aLiM maths group at our school.  Alim stands for accelerating learning in mathematics.  As part of our learning, we have been investigating mathematics in our community.  This morning the aLim groups one and two went for an adventure around Panmure.
While walking we took pictures of the things that we could see that involved mathematics. The things we saw in Panmure included:
  • ATM machines
  • Car number plates
  • Signs
  • Bus numbers
  • Bus stop numbers and timetables
  • Prices
  • Patterns created by blocks on the footpaths

After taking images around Panmure we walked to Settlers Tours and while we were there we talked to a travel Agent her name was Pauline. Pauline talked to us about the cost of traveling which included more that just our fare would be and what you can do and what you cannot do.

For example , if you are travelling by yourself or with a sibling you have to be over 10 years old and that is the thing that is allowed but one of the things that are not allowed when you are going to travel is even if you are 10 or older you are not to travel with a sibling that is 3 years old or younger. One of the most important thing that you should remember when you are about to travel is to always confirm or check who is picking you up from the airport. But if that person does not confirm that they are coming to pick you up then you will not be allowed to leave that  country that you are living in.

We found out that if you are under the age of 12 you get 75% off the adult price for travelling but if you are 12 and over you have to pay the full adult fare.

Talking to Pauline was interesting it really inspired me and got me thinking of being a travel agent when I grow up. What are you thinking of doing as a career when you grow up, if you do not have anything in mind or if you are not sure? Have a think about being a travel agent.

I also learnt that there is a lot of mathematics involved in this job and how it links to the things we learn in class. While browsing holiday magazines to check out prices being able to work our discounts for travel and see what kind of deals you could get.

On a previous trip 'Out and About' we also visited the bank and found out about currency exchange rates and about starting up personal bank accounts and the interest you can earn on your savings. Its all about mathematics. Knowing and understanding how maths is used in the real world is important.

Sherbet Experiment

Last week on Wednesday room 8 students did a sherbet Science experiment. What we used was icing sugar, baking powder, citric acid and a flavoured powder which was powder. Mrs Dines separated all the powders and acids into stations.

What we did was mix all the acids and powders into a beaker. When I mixed all the ingredients in the beaker I took a finger dip and when the sherbet hit my tongue the feeling was a spark of fizzy-ness. Then when I swallowed the powder it fizzed in my stomach.

But a few minutes later I scooped a teaspoon of the sherbet then I did not just get a spark of the fizz feeling I was hit with the feeling of fizz in my mouth it was sour and sweet at the same time. hen I gulped it down my throat I got a sick feeling an just wanted to spew back out.

As the holidays are coming up and you have nothing to do at home other than sit down and watching t.v, why don’t you do an experiment and make some sherbet yourself? Just remember to keep that in mind.

Science Experiment

WALT: observe and report on the chemical reaction that occur when combining substances altogether.
Today we used test tubes and beakers. We  were investigating chemical reactions between liquid and materials. The materials we used were: Citric Acid, Tartaric Acid, Baking Soda and Raro. And the liquids we used were: Lemon Juice and Vinegar.

William and I’s reaction diverged across the experiment:
  • Lemon + Raro
Hypothesize prediction - It will take time to react.

What happened?
There was no chemical reaction but it did have a change of colour
  • Tartaric Acid + Vinegar
Hypothesize prediction - Might have a chemical reaction immediately.

What happened?
It did not have a chemical reaction.
  • Citric Acid + Vinegar
Hypothesize prediction - Might not have a chemical reaction.

What happened?
It had no chemical reaction
  • Baking soda + Vinegar
Hypothesize prediction - chemical reaction might take time.

What happened?
The chemical reaction happened straight away.

Our science experiment took us from morning tea to the end of our school day. It was a interesting experiment because of our results.

Crocodile Creek

As we took our first step into the creek  we were taken to a  VIP room, when  we saw this tall muscular man standing at the entrance of the access door. “How can  I help you ? “He said in a low- pitched voice . “We were transmitted here  by a  young  lady who was called by the name of Bridget. “Why yes you are our assistants right. Hello my name is Johnson  Anderson  and you  are?” Johnson had said to the young handsome men.

“I'm  Michael and this is my brother Jason, and yes we are here to do  our jobs as the assistants for the new crocodile show.” Michael had said to  Johnson very politely. “Come with me we will now go and get you ready for the show, come along ” he said to the two young men. They both were directed to their dressing room . They were both dressed attractively in their tux.

They walked out with the magician. Michael had shivers running down his neck straight to his spine. Jason looked just as confident as the magician. They walked out into the creek. There was a row of crocodiles in the creek. Michael was shoved up in the corner of the changing room to freaked out to walk into the creek.

Jason dragged him out, and the crowd went wild. Michael put a fake smile on his face and was waving. Jason suggested that he should keep calm and move on. “What if I lose my mind and go psycho”. Michael said, “just be yourself and act normal thats all it takes” Jason said. As they stepped into the creek there were a lot of crocodiles trapped in a cage. The conductor turned around and whispered quietly to them, “we will be letting the crocodiles out in a minute, then it will be your turns to take the stage.

As the cage opened the crocodiles came rushing out. There was about two baby crocodiles, three male crocodiles and six females. As Michael and Jason stood there  frozen with fear. When the crocodiles were coming in the direction of Michael and Jason they were signaled to move closer to the crocodiles.
Just as the crocodiles came closer they sat at the feet of the two brothers. And as they looked down at their feet the crocodiles looked up gradually and gazed at them. Then the brothers threw the meat up and Michael said in a enormous voice “FETCH”, then the crocodiles bent their heads around and slowly walked towards the meat and about 10 minutes later they were all congested around the piece of meat.

Michael and Jason were relieved that the show was over. As they walked out of the creek they both said to each other that they will never get caught in that trouble again!

Easter Bunny Hop Part 1

Every year Manchester has a Easter celebration, that celebration is called the Easter Bunny Hop. The whole of Manchester gathers around the town hall and everyone joins in the dance called the bunny hop. It is a challenge when the whole of Manchester bunny hops around the town hall. It usually turns out the way we expected it to, but the last bunny hop turned out to be a disaster.

“Here it goes. It was year 1900 when this happens. The Manchester children always had one chance to be in this competition. The children Anne William, Sabrina Wright, Jonathan Walters  and Andy Summers had disappeared after that night of the Bunny hop. They had competed and all at the same time they were eliminated for attending the competition.

Not for only being under aged but if you are not the right age then something bad will happen to you not might it will happen to you or your life you never know, one or the other. Anyway back to the chase they were never seen again the next week and the next week and so on.” Said the leader of the Easter Bunny Hop.

“But what happen after that”, said little Eric. The Easter holiday came up and the Easter bunny hop was already here there was no sign of children in the competition. There were about 725 adults competing in the Easter Bunny Hop the Wright family won the competition. Then the family made their way to the Chinese take aways to celebrate them winning the Easter bunny hop and bringing home a 3 foot tall trophy.

As the Wright family travelled home from their celebration dinner. On their way up the driveway they saw something rather mysterious. As soon as their headlights hit the house a shadow zoomed passed the house. The family hadn’t noticed it until Eric shouted out “GHOST” in shock. They all did not believe at first, but then suddenly something had shook the car and that is when they all started to believe.

They quickly drove up the driveway to get service to Mr Wright’s cell phone. He called 111 emergency and asked for police. As they waited still and calm in the car waiting for the police.
Once the police made it they were all sleeping in the car.  The police sirens had awoken the family.

When the family got out of the car Little Eric explained the whole story of what happened that  very night. When Eric had finished his 20 min story the police had investigated the house and recognized that whatever they saw did not leave any footprints or any evidence behind it after it had left.

So where did it disappear to....... To Be continued

The Penny Farthing

WALHT: Find and use information to write a concise report that includes images to inform our readers.

The Penny Farthing bicycle was invented by James Starley a British Engineer. This bicycle was invented in England. It arrived on New Zealand's road in the year 1870. The Penny Farthing came out in the late 1860. The three men in the picture rode the penny farthing from Christchurch to the west Coast in the year 1887. Another name for the Penny Farthing is “Ordinary”.

This bicycle has a large sized wheel in the anterior side of the bike and a undersized wheel behind the bike. The front wheel of the penny farthing is immense because back in the year 1878 the Gears and all the motives were not invented.

The Penny Farthing was invented for only men because back in the 1800’s it was not suitable for women to ride, because what the women wore was not comfortable to wear. what they wore back then was dresses and petticoats under their dresses.

The bicycle’s front wheel was about 50 inches tall and the hind wheel is about 5 to 6 inches high. The bicycle itself is around the height of 5 feet tall or 1.5 metres high.

How the men get on to this bicycle is to climb on to the back wheel which has a bar that comes across from the hind wheel. Then when the men stand on the bar they will have to push themselves onto the seat and control the handle bars. On the bike there is two pedals just like a normal bike but the pedals are way higher up than regular bikes though and there is a seat that you can sit on at the top of the bike.

Despicable Me 2

It was the cold morning of July the 2nd the second day of the holidays. It was cold and windy but the sun was still up.“Get up everybody, and clean the house please. I will be back after 3.15pm. Bye I am going to work now.” My mum had said to me.We all got up and made a deal to finish cleaning the house in less than an hour. Our plan was to go to the movies and watch, ‘Despicable Me 2’.

After making the house spick and span we all got ready to scatter out of the house. We hopped into the car and drove to Sylvia Park.

Our first stop was Pak n Save. We brought junk food like chocolate, chips, bananas and a juice. And the only healthy snack we had was bananas.

The time of the movie was 12:30pm. We were supposed to watch it in 3d but it was later on in the day and we could not watch the 3d movie because my sister had work at three and the movie started at 3.30pm.

The time we got into the movie was 12:15pm. And the lights gradually turned off at 12:30pm. But instead of watching it in 3d we watched the movie on extreme Screen

The actors in the movie were Brue, 4 purple minions and 4 main yellow minions named Jerry, Kevin, Carl, Dave and Stuart.

The movie finished at 3.15pm and we had to rush back to the car and rapidly drive home because my sister was already late for work. It was a awesome movie to watch.

It was a spectacular day and we were lucky it did not rain. I hope we get another chance to go out together as a family.

Mysterious Journey

Congratulations on the marriage Amy and Sebastian. Hope you had the time of your lives, from Auntie Jamie. As Amy read on she decided to take a trip to a faraway destination where it would free her mind of everything. They packed the car with their bags and belongings ready to leave for Alligators Creek. “I wonder  what it will be like there. Maybe it will be quiet and so peaceful”, Amy said to Sebastian.

Amy finished packing the caravan and they both seated themselves in a comfy spot in front of it. Sebastian was driving and Amy had her eyes focused on the laptop staring at something unusual. He stopped the caravan in shock and fear because he glanced at the laptop.  He got out of his seat and opened the door and jumped out furiously  and opened Amy’s door.  Amy fell out of the caravan her body frozen and no words to say. She was lying on the road still and silent. Sebastian hopped into the caravan and drove off leaving the body of his wife.  He looked into his side mirror and Amy's body had vanished.

Sebastian crashed into the tree at the side of the road and the airbag hit his face forcing his head to hit the back of the chair. He got out of the caravan and  full to the ground too weak to pick himself up. Sebastian was miserable, he wondered where his wife's body had disappeared too. He was on the ground unconscious and the ambulance came speeding around a narrow corner, the Police followed on behind the ambulance.

Sebastian had awoken and found himself in the ambulance and by that time they were already at the hospital. He was asking the paramedics questions like where is my wife? because he had forgotten about the incident that had happened.

One whole year later Sebastian got a letter that looked unusual to him it had “police justice” written on the top left corner, he opened it in a rush. It had said to whom it may concern,  we have found the body of Mrs Anderson behind the mountain named Mount Tongariro. We will be continuing with this investigation but if we  have any further evidence we will alert you immediately. Sebastian fell to the ground and was sobbing non-stop.

One night he heard a bang at the front door, he got up went straight to the kitchen grabbed a knife and walked to the door. Sebastian was about a metre away from the door. The door suddenly swung open and hit the wall. Who could it be?
